Why We Choose Wool Felt (and not Synthetic Blends)
At Playtisserie, every decision we make is guided by what’s best for children, parents, and the planet. One of the most important choices we made early on was to use 100% wool felt for our toys, rather than synthetic alternatives like acrylic or polyester blends.
While many felt toys on the market today are made with cheap, synthetic felt (usually a form of plastic), we’ve chosen a different path, one that values natural materials, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
Here’s why that matters and why it’s part of what makes our play food feel so special.
🌱 Natural Over Plastic
Wool felt is made from real sheep’s wool, renewable, biodegradable, and non-toxic. In contrast, synthetic felt is made from petroleum-based fibres that are neither breathable nor biodegradable and often shed microplastics over time.
These plastics may look similar at first glance, but they don’t perform the same and certainly don’t feel the same. Our commitment to 100% wool felt means you’re giving your child a toy made from the earth, not from oil.
✨ Why Wool is a Wonder Material
Wool is far more than just “soft.” It’s one of nature’s most intelligent fibres, offering a host of benefits that make it particularly well-suited for children’s toys:
- Hypoallergenic – Wool is naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, and bacteria, making it ideal for children with allergies or sensitive skin.
- Breathable & Temperature-Regulating – Wool allows air to circulate, keeping toys from feeling clammy or sticky, unlike synthetic fibres that trap moisture.
- Antimicrobial – Wool fibres contain lanolin, which resists the growth of bacteria and helps keep toys fresher for longer without chemical treatments.
- Odour-Resistant – Because it breathes and repels moisture, wool is far less likely to hold onto odours than plastic-based materials.
- Naturally Flame-Resistant – Without needing to add chemical flame retardants, wool self-extinguishes if exposed to flame.
- Static-Resistant – No annoying clinging or dust-attracting static buildup.
- Noise-Reducing – Soft wool absorbs sound, which makes it ideal for calmer play environments (especially for sensory-sensitive kids).
These properties are all built into the fibre itself, no added coatings, no synthetic enhancements, just the quiet magic of wool.
💪 Durability That’s Surprisingly Tough
Our felt is created using traditional wet- and needle-felting techniques, which tightly compress the wool fibres into a strong, cohesive material. It holds its shape beautifully, resists pilling, and stands up to years of play. Unlike many synthetic felts that can fray, stretch, or fuzz quickly, wool felt gets better with age, softening slightly while retaining its structure.
🌸 Sensory-Friendly Texture
Wool felt has a warm, dense texture that feels comforting in the hands, inviting children to explore it again and again. It’s soft enough for toddlers, yet firm enough to keep its form during pretend cooking, stacking, serving, and storytelling. It also offers gentle resistance when squeezed, which provides satisfying tactile feedback for developing hands.
🧡 Felt vs. Wood: A Thoughtful Balance
We love wooden toys too, and many families treasure them as keepsakes. But we also recognise that they aren’t always the best choice for younger children or those with additional sensory or developmental needs.
Wood can be heavy, rigid, or noisy. For children still learning motor control or who benefit from gentler, quieter play, wool felt is an ideal complement:
- Lightweight and soft, safe for little ones who are still learning to control their strength
- Quiet on hard surfaces, ideal for play in shared or sound-sensitive environments
- Safe if dropped or thrown, which can be particularly helpful for toddlers or children with sensory processing differences
In other words, wool felt brings all the tactile and imaginative joy of natural materials—without the weight or edges of wood.
🌏 Ethical, Artisan-Made
All of our felt toys are made by hand by skilled artisans in Nepal, using wool sourced from New Zealand sheep. Every purchase supports fair wages and meaningful employment for women artisans, many of whom are mothers themselves.
We’re proud to play a small part in preserving traditional craft, while offering toys that are safe, sustainable, and beautiful.
In a World of Plastic, We Choose Wool. We believe the things your child plays with should feel good, do good, and last. That’s why we’ve chosen natural wool.
